Pandal Decoration Colours and Themes: Which Colours for the Wedding, Haldi, Sangeet, Bhaat, Jagran and Every Function, by Day, Night and Season (Pandal Sajawat Rang Theme)

The first decoration decision isn't about items, it's about colour. The same pandal looks royal in red and gold drapes, bright as a haldi in yellow and orange, and like a sangeet night under coloured LEDs. When the pandal, gate, stage and path share one colour scheme, even modest decoration looks full and planned. This guide covers which colours suit which function and how to combine them. Bharat Tent & Light House, Khorra does theme decoration with drapes, flowers and lighting.
1. Colours by function
| Function | Commonly chosen colours | Goes with |
|---|---|---|
| Wedding, pheras, varmala | Red, maroon, gold | Marigold and roses, a royal gate |
| Haldi | Yellow, orange, pink | Marigold strings, hangings |
| Mehndi | Green, pink | Coloured drapes, good light |
| Sangeet and DJ night | Bright and colourful | Coloured LEDs, jhalar, dance floor |
| Reception / bahu-bhoj | Light shades: white, cream, pink, gold | Jhoomar, focus lights |
| Bhaat | Red-yellow, colourful | A flower gate |
| Jagran, mata ki chowki | Red, yellow, orange | A flower darbar, all-night lighting |
| Katha, havan, griha pravesh | Yellow, orange, white | Marigold, mango leaves |
| Birthday | Any bright colour the family likes | Balloons |
| Shop inauguration | The shop board's or brand's colours | Gate and ribbon |
These are common choices, not rules. The family's own taste or clan tradition comes first.
At times of bereavement (kaaj, tehrvi, shok sabha) there is no colourful decoration: a simple, light-coloured shamiyana, and white cloth and flowers at the place of tribute. More in the tehrvi and shok sabha guide.
2. An easy way to combine colours
- Two main colours and one accent: say red and yellow, with gold. More than three or four colours and the decoration looks scattered
- Gate, path and stage together: the gate's colours carry into the path drapes and the stage backdrop, so guests recognise the theme as they walk in
- The stage darkest: keep the pandal ceiling and walls light and the stage backdrop in the deepest colour, so eyes and photos go there
- Mind the outfits: if you know the couple's outfit colours, keep the backdrop different; a red lehenga gets lost against a red wall in photos
3. Day function or night
- By day cloth and flower colours show true; for daytime functions like haldi and mehndi, bright yellow, orange and pink work best
- At night the lighting makes the colour: coloured LEDs on light drapes turn them that colour, so white and cream drapes are the most useful at night
- For a function running from evening into night, light drapes with warm yellow light look good at both times
Lighting in full is in wedding light decoration.
4. How the season matters
- Summer: light, cool colours (white, cream, pale pink, green) make the pandal look open and airy; dark kanat looks heavy in the sun
- Winter: deep, warm colours (red, maroon, gold) give a closed pandal a cosy look
- Rainy season: under a waterproof roof, light colours keep the inside bright
5. A theme on a small budget
- Decorate the gate, stage and the middle of the ceiling in the theme colours rather than the whole pandal
- Elsewhere, plain drapes and the right lighting; at night the light alone changes the colour
- Fresh flowers only where they matter, artificial elsewhere; see fresh or artificial flowers
6. One setup, several functions
When the house has functions over several days, the whole pandal needn't be redone each time: keep the pandal, change the stage backdrop, drapes and lighting. Yellow for the haldi, green-pink for the mehndi, coloured LEDs for the sangeet; say so at booking so the right items come.

FAQ
Which colours suit a wedding pandal?
Usually red, maroon and gold, the traditional wedding colours. Light shades (white, cream, pink) look lovely at a reception too. Most important is that the gate, path and stage share one colour scheme.
What colour should haldi decoration be?
Yellow, orange and pink, with marigold strings and hangings. The haldi is a daytime function, so bright colours photograph best.
How many colours should the decoration have?
Two main colours and one accent, such as red-yellow with gold. More than three or four and the decoration looks scattered.
What colour drapes for a night function?
Light ones, such as white or cream. At night the lighting makes the colour: coloured LEDs turn the drapes that colour, so one setup can take several looks.
Can each day of a multi-day function have different decoration?
Yes. The pandal stays and the stage backdrop, drapes and lighting change. Tell Bharat Tent & Light House, Khorra at booking which colour you want on which day.
