The Girl's Godh Bharai in Haryana: the Old Ritual That Fixes the Rishta, Welcoming the Boy's Family, Seating, Shagun and Refreshments (Godh Bharai Ki Rasam)

In Haryana's villages, godh bharai means the ritual that fixes the rishta. The boy's family, 10-20 people at most, come to the girl's home and give the girl shagun, filling her lap (godh). That makes the match fixed, much like a roka today. Over the last five to ten years many families have started holding a ring sagai instead, but many homes still do the godh bharai. It's a small function, but the guests are the boy's family, so seating, welcome and refreshments should be good. Bharat Tent & Light House, Khorra arranges all of it at the girl's home.
Godh bharai, roka and sagai: how the arrangements differ
| Godh bharai | Sagai (ring ceremony) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | The girl's home | The girl's or boy's home, sometimes a big function |
| How many | 10-20 from the boy's side | Relatives from both sides, sometimes over a hundred |
| Main ritual | Shagun for the girl, filling her lap | Exchanging rings, both on a stage |
| Arrangements | Good seating, the girl's seat, refreshments or a meal | Stage, backdrop, large seating, a meal, sometimes a DJ |
The bigger roka and sagai setup is covered in roka and sagai at home.
1. Seating for the boy's family
What matters most at a godh bharai is that the boy's family are welcomed with respect and seated well:
- The baithak room or the courtyard, depending on space; in a courtyard, a small shamiyana overhead against sun or dew
- A sofa for the elders and chairs or durries and mattresses for the rest, as the family's custom is
- A small table with a tablecloth in front for the refreshments
- In winter, seating indoors with thick durries; in summer, a fan or cooler
2. The girl's seat
At the lap-filling the girl sits in front of everyone:
- A decorated chair or small sofa for her, or a nice durrie and mattress if the custom is to sit on the floor
- A light drape backdrop and a few flowers behind, so the photos come out well
- Enough open space in front for the boy's mother and the other women to come up and give the shagun
3. The shagun
What goes into the shagun is each family's and gotra's own custom. Usually the boy's family bring shagun money, a chunni or suit, a coconut, sweets and dry fruit. For this:
- A covered table for the shagun trays and sweet boxes
- A separate spot for anything the girl's side gives the boy's family in return
4. Refreshments or a meal
- At a small godh bharai tea, sweets and snacks are enough; many families also serve lunch
- Our halwai can cook at your home, or if you have your own, we supply the utensils and bhatti
- Crockery: plates, cups, glasses and service trays, so everything looks matching and clean in front of the guests
- A jug and glasses of water in the seating area itself
5. When it grows
Sometimes more guests come, or the girl's relatives gather the same day. Then a pandal in the courtyard or lane, more chairs and food counters; how much you'll need is in how many guests, how much setup.
