Shamiyana, Pandal or Waterproof Tent: Which Is Right for Your Function?

The first question at any tent house is: shamiyana or pandal? And what if it rains? This guide explains all three simply.
When a family comes to us to book, the first question is always: shamiyana or pandal? And what if it rains? Bharat Tent & Light House, Khorra has been setting up all three at homes, courtyards and streets in our villages since 1995. In this guide we explain, from the tent wala's side, the difference between a shamiyana, a pandal and a waterproof tent, and which one we would suggest for your function.
What is a shamiyana?
A shamiyana is a traditional canopy: covered on top and usually open at the sides. It's ideal for seating, pangat, bhaat, small functions and daytime events. Air flows through and it's quick to set up.
For a bhaat or a daytime bhandara, we put up a shamiyana in your courtyard or outside the house, lay durries or carpets underneath and bring chairs and tables if needed. For daytime functions in summer, we also set up coolers under the shamiyana.
What is a pandal?
A pandal is a larger structure enclosed with kanat (side walls). Inside go the stage, chandeliers, lights and decoration. It's the usual choice for the main wedding function, receptions and night events.
For the baraat dinner, varmala and pheras at a daughter's wedding, or the bahu-bhoj at a son's wedding, we build a pandal, put kanat all around, do the stage and decoration inside, and bring the full jhalar, LED lights and generator setup along with it. See the complete pandal setup here.
When do you need a waterproof tent?
In the monsoon, during unseasonal rain or on dewy winter nights, choose a waterproof tent or pandal so the function carries on and guests and items stay safe.
If your date falls in the rainy season, tell us at the time of booking. We bring a tent or pandal with a waterproof roof, so guests, food, the halwai's bhatti and the decoration all stay dry. For full rain preparation, read: Rain at your wedding.
How to choose
| Function | Best option |
|---|---|
| Seating, pangat, daytime bhandara | Shamiyana |
| Wedding, reception, night function | Pandal + kanat + decoration |
| Rainy season | Waterproof tent/pandal |
| Jagran | Pandal + stage + lights |
Many weddings use both: a shamiyana for dining and a decorated pandal for the pheras and stage. We bring both together, set them up to suit your space and guest count, and take everything back after the function. Transport is free.
Still not sure? Come to Khorra and see our goods and pandal and stage designs for yourself, or WhatsApp your date, place and guest count to 99918 64283. We will do the job to your satisfaction for the amount you tell us.
FAQ
What is the difference between a shamiyana and a pandal?
Around here a shamiyana usually means a traditional canopy, covered on top and mostly open at the sides, good for seating, pangat and daytime functions. A pandal is usually a larger structure closed on the sides with kanat, with the stage and decoration inside. Rain protection depends on the roof fabric, not the name: either can have a waterproof roof. Bharat Tent & Light House, Khorra sets up both.
When should I take a waterproof tent?
In the rainy season or whenever the weather is uncertain. Bharat Tent & Light House, Khorra brings and sets up both waterproof tents and pandals at your home. Tell us at the time of booking so there is no last-minute rush.
Do you decorate inside the pandal?
Yes. Bharat Tent & Light House, Khorra does the complete decoration inside the pandal itself: stage, drapes, chandeliers, lights and flowers (fresh or artificial). Call or WhatsApp 99918 64283 for the rate.
