Arranging a Kaaj for an Elder: A Simple Pandal, a Place for Tribute, Pangat in Rounds and Water

A kaaj held in memory of an elder is a meal for the whole clan and village. People come from nearby villages too, and they keep arriving in groups all day. Two things matter most: the setup should look simple and respectful, and hundreds of people should be fed without crowding. Bharat Tent & Light House, Khorra has arranged kaaj meals in villages since 1995: we bring everything, set it up and pack it all away afterwards.
1. The date is often fixed at short notice
Families usually fix the kaaj date within a few days, while also informing all their relatives. So call or WhatsApp 99918 64283 as soon as the date is set; the phone is answered 24 hours. We first confirm the items are free on that date, then size the pandal and the halwai's equipment from the expected number of people.
2. Simple and respectful
A kaaj follows a loss; it is not a wedding. So:
- Plain, light-coloured drapes and white lights instead of colourful drapes and jhalar
- No elaborate flower gate; just a clean entrance and durries along the path
- No DJ; all that's needed is a mic (see below)
If the family wants something different, such as bhajans or kirtan, we set up a small stage and sound for it.
3. A place for tribute
Everyone who arrives first pays respects to the elder. Near the entrance we set up:
- A covered table for their photo, a garland, a diya and incense
- A plain white drape behind the photo
- Chairs nearby for the family elders, where they can meet those arriving
4. Pangat in rounds: how the crowd is handled
At a kaaj people don't arrive at once; they come in groups through the day. So instead of one big sitting, pangat in rounds works best:
- One part of the pandal for pangat (long durries), another for people waiting (chairs and durries)
- One round rises, the durries are cleared, the next sits; we make the pangat area big enough to seat a good number at a time
- In many villages men and women eat in separate pangats; if so, we divide the area with kanat
- Some chairs and tables set aside for the elderly and unwell
We set up pandals for up to about 1000 people; the size depends on how many sit in one round, not on the total number coming through the day.
5. A mic to call each round
Calling the next pangat by shouting over a crowd is hard. A mic and two speakers make it easy to call each round, give relatives from outside any announcements, and play bhajans.
6. Water and hand-washing
For hundreds of guests, water is the biggest need, especially in summer:
- More than one drinking-water counter, so no single point gets crowded
- A hand-washing point on the way out of the pangat, with buckets, mugs and drainage so the durries stay dry
- Coolers or fans in the pandal in summer
7. Kitchen and meal
Our halwai cooks the whole kaaj meal at your home or the chaupal, with the bhatti, large utensils and serving equipment, and the menu follows your family's tradition. We place the kitchen a little away from the pandal so smoke and the bhatti's heat don't reach the pangat. Our bhandara guide also helps with estimating food for a large meal.
Bringing items to the family home or chaupal within 25 km costs you nothing extra. Whatever budget the family sets for the kaaj, we lay out at booking how it covers the pandal, pangat and kitchen.
FAQ
How big a pandal does a kaaj need?
It depends on how many people sit in one pangat round, not the total arriving through the day, because guests come in groups. The size adds up the pangat area, the waiting area and the kitchen. Bharat Tent & Light House, Khorra sets up pandals for up to about 1000 people.
What kind of decoration suits a kaaj?
Simple and respectful: light-coloured drapes, white lights, a clean entrance with durries, and a covered table near the entrance for the elder's photo and garland. No colourful jhalar or DJ; only a mic is needed.
The kaaj date was fixed only a few days ahead. Can you still arrange it?
Call or WhatsApp 99918 64283 as soon as the date is set; the phone is answered 24 hours. We'll first tell you whether the items are free on that date, then plan the pandal and the halwai's equipment from the number of people.
How does pangat in rounds work at a kaaj?
One part of the pandal has the pangat durries and another has seating for those waiting. When a round rises, the durries are cleared and the next round is called on the mic. If men and women eat separately, we divide the area with kanat.
How should we arrange water and hand-washing at a kaaj?
Keep more than one drinking-water counter so there's no crush, and set up a hand-washing point with buckets and mugs on the way out of the pangat, with drainage so the durries stay dry. In summer we also put coolers or fans in the pandal.
