Bahu-Bhoj and Reception at Home: The Couple's Stage, a Shagun Table, a Resting Space for the Bride and a Meal for the Whole Village

On the groom's side, once the pheras are done and the bride comes home for the first time, the family holds a bahu-bhoj to welcome her. In towns it's called a reception. It's the day the whole village, the extended family and relatives meet the new bride, bless the couple and give shagun, and then eat together. For the groom's family it is often the biggest meal of the whole wedding. A good bahu-bhoj rests on three things: the couple's stage, the bride's comfort, and well-run food. Bharat Tent & Light House, Khorra sets up the full bahu-bhoj pandal in the courtyard, the lane or a field.
1. Right after the wedding
The bahu-bhoj usually falls the day after the wedding or a few days later, straight after the ghudchadhi, nikasi and baraat. The family is tired and time is short, so:
- Give us the bahu-bhoj date when you book the wedding, so items for both functions are planned together
- If the dates are close, decide in advance which items stay in place and which change, so the day in between isn't a scramble
- The head count differs from the baraat: the village and extended family come too, so count again
2. The couple's stage
The heart of a bahu-bhoj is the couple's stage, where the bride and groom sit for hours while every guest comes up to meet them:
- A comfortable two-seater sofa with a backdrop of flowers or drapes behind
- A stage wide enough for families giving blessings to stand with the couple for photos
- Wide steps so elders can come up easily
- A focus light on the couple's faces so photos and video come out clear even at night
3. The shagun and gift table
Guests at a bahu-bhoj give shagun, envelopes and gifts. To one side of the stage:
- A covered table with two chairs where a trusted family member sits and records the shagun
- A separate place for gifts, so they don't pile up on the stage
- A light of its own over this table, so names are easy to write
4. A resting space for the bride
The new bride sits on stage for hours, and many families also hold a munh-dikhai. For her:
- A small room screened with kanat behind the stage where she can rest, drink water and fix her clothes
- A cooler or fan near the stage in summer
- A separate seating area for women for the munh-dikhai, if that's your family's custom
5. A meal for the whole village
The numbers at a bahu-bhoj are large and every age group comes:
- The dining area in a large pandal or German hanger, a little away from the stage so the food crowd doesn't gather in front of the couple
- A pangat on durries for elders and villagers and a buffet for relatives and younger guests can run side by side
- The halwai's utensils are usually already at the house from the wedding; tell the halwai the bahu-bhoj menu in advance
- A separate water counter and a place to wash hands
6. Evening lights and DJ
If the bahu-bhoj is in the evening:
- Jhalar and floodlights across the pandal and a lit entrance gate
- A DJ (on demand) for the younger crowd, kept at a level where elders on the stage can still talk
- A generator for power cuts, so the stage and dining area never go dark
A new bride's first day becomes her first memory of the home and the village. Plan the bahu-bhoj together with the wedding: tell us the budget you have for the stage, pandal, lights and food and we'll suggest the best setup within it, with no separate charge for bringing the items anywhere within 25 km of Khorra. 99918 64283.
FAQ
What does a bahu-bhoj need?
A decorated stage with a sofa for the couple, a shagun table, a kanat-screened resting space for the bride, a pandal for guests, pangat or buffet, a halwai, and in the evening lights, a DJ and a generator.
What's the difference between a bahu-bhoj and a reception?
They are the same function: the meal the groom's family gives after the bride comes home. Villages call it bahu-bhoj, towns call it a reception. In villages there's often a pangat as well; in towns it's mostly a buffet.
Can I book the wedding and bahu-bhoj items together?
Yes, and it's the better way. Give the bahu-bhoj date when you book the wedding, so the items, stage and pandal for both functions are planned together and the day in between isn't a scramble at home.
How should the bahu-bhoj stage be decorated?
A comfortable two-seater sofa, a backdrop of flowers or drapes, wide steps and a focus light on the couple. Keep the stage wide enough for a whole family coming to give blessings to fit in the photo with the couple.
Should a bahu-bhoj have a pangat or a buffet?
Both can run together: a pangat on durries for elders and villagers, and a buffet for relatives and younger guests. Bharat Tent & Light House, Khorra brings both the durries for pangat and the buffet counters.
