Groom's Side vs Bride's Side Wedding: What Each Needs, From a Tent House's View

If there's a wedding in your family, the first question is: is it the groom's side or the bride's side? For a tent house the two are completely different. A groom's-side wedding has many smaller functions over several days, while a bride's-side wedding has the single biggest arrangement in one night: welcoming the baraat, the pheras and the vidaai. Bharat Tent & Light House, Khorra has arranged both sides of village weddings since 1995. Here's what each needs, from a tent house's view.
Groom's side: many days, many functions
On the groom's side, functions run at home over several days, each with different needs.
Bhaat ceremony
When the maternal uncle's family brings bhaat, a large crowd of relatives gathers at home. You need:
- A tent or shamiyana in the courtyard or outside
- Durries, chairs and tables
- A halwai and food
Haldi, mehndi and DJ nights
- A small tent and light decoration at home
- DJ and sound for mehndi and music nights (on demand)
- Jhalar lights on the house and street, glowing every night until the wedding
Ghudchadhi and baraat departure (nikasi)
The liveliest moment of the groom's side. You need:
- Full lighting in the street
- DJ and sound for the departure
- Generator backup so the power doesn't fail right at the nikasi
Bedding for relatives
Relatives staying several days need gadde (mattresses), rajai (quilts) and dari on rent, especially in winter.
Bahu-bhoj / reception
After the bride arrives there's a bahu-bhoj or reception: pandal, stage, lights and halwai, like a smaller wedding.
Bride's side: one night, the biggest arrangement
On the bride's side the baraat comes to your home, so the whole responsibility of hosting is yours. For a tent house this is the biggest job.
Welcoming the baraat and milni
- A decorated entry gate and lit walkway
- Space for the milni
- Seating for the baraatis
Food for both families
- A large pandal that seats both baraatis and the host family
- Halwai, food counters and crockery
- Give an accurate guest count in advance
Varmala stage
The couple's decorated stage and sofa with flowers and lights, where most photos are taken. For ideas, see how to decorate a wedding stage.
Mandap and pheras
- A mandap with flower decoration for the pheras
- Pheras often happen late at night, so lights and generator all night
- In winter, a pandal closed with kanat, plus carpets
Janwasa: where the baraat rests
The baraat needs a janwasa to rest: a tent or room with gadde, rajai and dari. We provide everything for the janwasa.
Vidaai
Lights and arrangements stay until the morning vidaai, and then we pack up and take everything back.
