Arranging a Griha Pravesh: Power in a New House, the Havan, the Main Door and the Feast

The first entry into a new home, the griha pravesh, marks years of a family's hard work. One thing sets it apart from other functions: the house is new, so it is often not quite finished. The permanent electricity connection may not have come yet, the ground around is unpaved, or bricks and sand are still lying about. So the griha pravesh has to be planned around the site. Bharat Tent & Light House, Khorra brings the tent, power, decoration and feast equipment to your new house and sets it up.
1. First, check the state of the new house
Before booking, tell us these four things or WhatsApp photos of the house and its surroundings:
- Power: is there a permanent connection or not
- Ground: is the tent area level, unpaved, or covered in building debris
- Access: can our vehicle reach the house, or will items be carried from a distance
- Guests: roughly how many will come for the feast
2. No power? Then a generator
This is the most common problem at new houses. The havan, lights, fans or coolers and the halwai all need electricity. So:
- Without a permanent connection the whole function runs on a generator; we bring the right size plus the wiring
- With a weak or temporary connection, a generator backup so the power doesn't fail at the muhurat
- We don't load heavy tent lighting onto the new house wiring; the tent gets its own board
3. A tent on unfinished ground
- Have bricks, sand and debris cleared from the tent area first; we cover the rest of the ground with durries and carpets
- On raw earth with a chance of rain, a waterproof tent and durries along the path
- If there's little space in front, a shamiyana can go on an empty plot or in the street; please speak to the neighbours beforehand
4. The havan: mind the new paint and ceiling
The griha pravesh havan is often held inside the house or in the courtyard:
- If it's inside, keep windows and doors open so smoke doesn't settle on the fresh paint and ceiling
- For a large havan or many people seated, an open shamiyana in the courtyard or outside works better
- Durries and asans around the havan kund, with a separate asan for the pandit ji
5. Decorating the main door
The first photo of a griha pravesh is at the main door, as the family enters carrying the kalash:
- A toran of marigold and mango leaves on the door (flower decoration)
- Strings of flowers on both sides of the door
- Jhalar and LED lights outside in the evening, so the new house shines from afar
6. Shoes and guests touring the house
Every guest wants to see the new house from inside:
- A place to leave shoes by the main door, with a durrie underneath, to keep the new floor clean
- Seating and food in a pandal outside, so the house doesn't get crowded and people can look around in turns
7. The feast
After the havan comes the feast for relatives and neighbours. Our halwai cooks at the new house, with the bhatti set up in open space away from the fresh walls. We bring the crockery, large utensils and serving counters.
The griha pravesh muhurat is often early in the morning, so we set up the tent, power and decoration the day before. Bringing everything to your new house within 25 km costs nothing extra, and within whatever budget you keep for the day, we agree at booking how much goes to power, tent and feast. 99918 64283.
FAQ
The new house has no electricity connection. How will the griha pravesh work?
The whole function can run on a generator: we bring the right size and wiring for the havan, lights, fans or coolers and the halwai. Tell us at booking that there's no connection so everything is planned for it.
When will the tent go up for a griha pravesh?
Everything is ready by the previous evening: the tent, a tested generator, the toran and lights. In the morning you only need to think about the havan samagri and the pandit ji. If nobody will stay at the house overnight, tell us and we'll come early that morning to put up the delicate decoration.
Should the griha pravesh havan be inside or outside?
It depends on the size of the havan and your family's custom. Many families hold a small havan in the central room while guests sit in the pandal outside; we then put a speaker in the pandal so those outside can hear the mantras. If it's inside, keep windows open for the smoke.
How should we decorate the main door for a griha pravesh?
A toran of marigold and mango leaves on the door, flower strings on both sides, and jhalar and LED lights outside in the evening. Bharat Tent & Light House, Khorra does this before the muhurat.
The ground around the new house is unpaved. Can a tent still go up?
Yes. Have the debris cleared and we'll lay durries and carpets over the rest; with a chance of rain, a waterproof tent. WhatsApp a photo of the space and we'll tell you where and how big the tent can be.
